The
banners of the 1970s represent a particular political engagement. They are
'agitational' paintings both from and for the street, and are distinctly anti-fascist.
These were the days of the Anti-Nazi League and Artists Against Racism and
Fascism, and Yeadon's banners were produced in direct response to the rise
of the National Front in Britain and to the events in Chile in 1973. In 1974
Yeadon became interested in the 'demonstration' as a political form of carnival
- people taking to the streets - and the contribution the artist could make
to these extra-political events.
This
section also includes commissioned banners for The Communist Party of Chile
in Exile and the Keresley Banner which celebrates the role of Keresley/Coventry
women in the 1984-85 miners strike.
